Profile. Karen Rothe is a lifelong Victorian, Vic West resident and downtown worker with a public-service career focused on planning and prevention, municipal affairs and emergency management. She served for 22 years as the property-management coordinator for her strata and has volunteered at City events. Professionally, she has worked on the 2017 Williams Lake wildfire evacuation, sustained provincial funding for BC Search and Rescue and the provincial team responsible for Metro Vancouver’s regional growth strategy. For voters, that offers unusually relevant experience in emergency coordination, regional planning and long-horizon infrastructure decisions; the corresponding test is whether a general stewardship platform becomes a specific City budget and delivery programme.

2026 campaign and social verification. karenrothe.ca is a current, authorized twelve-page site. The canonical policy page is /priorities, and it sets out four named themes, not three: Creating Trust Through Better Leadership (council has delegated to staff; a commitment to listen, communicate and be transparent); Restoring Downtown, Protecting Our Neighbourhoods (remove the barriers to downtown; community associations as stewards); Better Planning for Better Outcomes (decisions backed by facts and data; no kicking the can down the road); and Responsible Stewardship (limited resources; core local-government responsibilities). A second content page, /why-im-running, was missed in the 1 Sep pass and carries the only fiscal diagnosis she has published: "We have expensive capital projects; we have an aging population; we have a large deficit; we have an affordability issue; there is constant construction and disruption; and we have businesses that are leaving the City." Current-platform note. The campaign identifies priorities and a governing approach but does not publish a fiscal baseline, tax path, capital schedule, permit standard, emergency-preparedness inventory, transit commitment, public-safety staffing plan or recurring performance dashboard. Rothe’s emergency-management and regional-planning experience is relevant background, not evidence of an unspoken policy. As of 2 Sep 2026 she is declared but not nominated — the City lists accepted nominations for Alto and Atkinson (Mayor) and Gardiner (Council). Nominations close 11 Sep at 4 PM, and her column is provisional until then.

📋 Correction history. An earlier version of this page recorded a divergence with M45c on Centennial Square. Read in full context her objection is to that plan and that timing, not to renewal as such, and M45c's own mechanism — consult, residents shortlist, referendum — is what she asks for. The divergence was overstated and has been withdrawn. A snippet is not a source, and it cuts both ways.
